The story is set in the backdrop of workers’ struggles, and protests against the infamous ‘chappa’ system of contingent labour allocation and the “guarantee of work” scheme prevalent at Kochi’s Mattancherry port during the 1940s and 50s. Metal tokens called chappas were thrown into the waiting crowd of workers, where they fought for tickets (chappas). Whoever manages to get by will be given work for the day in the wharves or warehouses. Three labourers were killed in police firing in protest against this system. The story further revolves around two brothers, who are opposite sides in the epic struggle of daily wage labourers against dock owners.
